Dissidents

Mexico City has long been the heart of protest in Mexico. From Reforma Avenue to the Zócalo square, these spaces have served as the main stage for public outcry—whether against poverty, corruption, violence, or human rights abuses. Nearly every major social movement in the country has passed through these streets.

This series brings together images of protests that took place during the presidencies of Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto, periods marked by rising violence, deepening inequality, and political scandal. Calderón’s war on drugs unleashed a wave of militarization and bloodshed, while Peña Nieto’s term was defined by impunity, including the 2014 disappearance of 43 students in Ayotzinapa.

The protests captured here reflect a nation demanding justice and accountability, often in the face of state repression. In these images, Mexico City becomes not just a backdrop, but a witness to a society in resistance.
