Havana

In November 2023, the UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution condemning the American economic embargo of Cuba for the 31st consecutive year—187 countries voted in favor, with only the U.S. and Israel opposing, and Ukraine abstaining. While symbolic, the vote reflects a global consensus at odds with the daily realities on the island.

This series captures daily life in Havana at the end of 2023, where the toll of the embargo is felt in nearly every aspect of survival—from empty store shelves and fuel shortages to crumbling infrastructure. Decades of economic restrictions, compounded by inflation and post-pandemic hardship, have pushed many Cubans into increasingly precarious conditions. And yet, resilience persists. Communities share resources, hold on to cultural traditions, and adapt with remarkable ingenuity.
